President Tharman to Make First State Visit to Malaysia

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam is set to embark on his first state visit to Malaysia, a significant diplomatic engagement scheduled from Sunday, July 12, to July 15. The visit is extended at the invitation of Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, signaling a strengthening of bilateral ties.

This trip reciprocates Sultan Ibrahim's own state visit to Singapore in May 2024. During his stay, President Tharman will engage in a series of high-level meetings. In Kuala Lumpur, he is scheduled to attend a welcome ceremony at the Istana Negara, meet with Sultan Ibrahim and Malaysian Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah, and receive a courtesy call from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The President will also connect with economic and finance sector leaders at the Kuala Lumpur Business Club and participate in a breakfast roundtable with business leaders.

The itinerary also includes a reception for overseas Singaporeans residing in Malaysia. In Selangor, President Tharman will have an audience with Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and meet with the state's chief minister, Mr Amirudin Shari. He will be accompanied by his wife, Jane Ittogi, and a delegation including Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu, Minister of State Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim, and Mayor of Central Singapore Denise Phua.
