Presidential election 2027: 'I fear no competition,' says Bruno Retailleau, favoring a primary

Bruno Retailleau, a candidate for the 2027 French presidential election and a prominent figure within Les Républicains (LR), has declared his readiness to participate in a primary election. This statement comes in the wake of calls from other political figures, including Hervé Morin, president of the Normandy region, for a unified primary to select a candidate for the "right and center" bloc.

Speaking on France 2, Retailleau asserted, "If there is a primary, I will face it." He further elaborated, "I have never said no to a primary in principle." Retailleau pointed to his previous successes in internal party elections, having won twice with nearly 74% of the vote, securing his position as party president and the presumptive candidate for 2027. Despite his confidence, he acknowledged that he "fears no competition."

However, Retailleau expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a primary actually taking place. He described the process as potentially becoming bogged down in "political squabbles" and "internal maneuvering." The diversity of opinions and conditions set by various potential candidates, including those who favor a primary and those who seem to oppose it, such as Édouard Philippe, contribute to his doubts.

Other political figures are also weighing in on the possibility of a primary. David Lisnard, the LR mayor of Cannes, has been a vocal proponent of a "grand primary," inviting all potential contenders to participate. Meanwhile, Gabriel Attal, a candidate from the Renaissance party, has also indicated openness to a primary, suggesting that candidates should not fear such a contest if they intend to run for president. The debate over the format for selecting the conservative and centrist candidate for the 2027 election remains active.
