Gabriel Attal, a candidate for the Renaissance party in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, has openly called for a primary contest, asserting that the race is no longer dominated by a single favorite. Attal's comments, made on BFMTV/RMC, suggest a shift in the political landscape, with polls indicating that Édouard Philippe may no longer hold a decisive lead over Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the first round.

The call for a primary comes amidst growing acknowledgment of distinct political stances between Attal and Philippe. Attal pointed to specific policy disagreements, particularly in education, citing differences in approaches to inclusion and teacher replacements. He also criticized Philippe's pension reform proposals, labeling the divergence as a "profound difference" in their overall visions for the country.

Attal's stance appears to be gaining traction within the "central bloc" of French politics. Hervé Morin, president of the Normandy region, has publicly called for a primary involving the center-right, a sentiment echoed by Attal, who stated he has "never ruled it out." He suggested that a reluctance to participate in a primary might indicate a lack of readiness for the presidential election itself.
