‘Prevent or Regret’ campaign targets drunk driving during Chile’s national celebrations

Chile is warning drivers that a single decision during Fiestas Patrias can turn a celebration into a tragedy. The National Service for the Prevention and Rehabilitation of Drug and Alcohol Use, known as SENDA, and the Interior Ministry launched the “Prevent or Regret” campaign days before the national celebrations.

Today we are launching this campaign to redouble efforts so that we can have a greater presence. We have been informed that there will be more than 100 operations during Fiestas Patrias, and the aim is to reduce the figures we have unfortunately seen in other years.

The campaign includes a video spot highlighting the consequences of driving after drinking or using drugs. SENDA acting director Eduardo Barros said authorities would increase their presence and carry out more than 100 operations during the celebrations.

Carabineros official Juan Pablo Díaz said 24 people died during last year’s Fiestas Patrias. He added that more than 900 people had died to date from various causes, with alcohol and drugs ranking third among the causes cited. Interior Undersecretary Máximo Pavez said SENDA’s Zero Tolerance program conducted more than 9,000 checks in August and was preparing a special program for the holiday period.

The government urged people to plan ahead and ensure that anyone who drives does not drink. The Metropolitan Health Secretariat also intensified inspections of traditional foods. Health Secretary Pía Venegas said empanadas should not remain in a refrigerator for more than three days at a maximum of 5 degrees Celsius. She advised consumers to check their smell and appearance, avoid products with an acidic odor or damaged pastry, and keep them protected rather than outdoors.

Therefore, what is the government’s call? To be aware, to plan, and if someone is going to drive, they cannot drink. Let’s have a September and Fiestas Patrias without tragedies to regret.

Health authorities said residents can submit complaints or ask questions through the Metropolitan Health Secretariat website or the Salud Responde telephone line.
