Prime accused remanded as eight more arrested

A court has placed the prime accused in the killing of a Special Branch sub-inspector in Savar on a five-day remand, while police arrested eight more suspects in the case.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Ayesha Siddika issued the order after Zahurul Islam, 30, was brought before the court with a request for 10 days of remand. Savar Model Police Station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said police arrested Zahurul on Sunday over the murder of Md Altab Hossain.

Rab-10 also arrested eight other accused during raids in Munshiganj and Aminbazar on Sunday night. Its commanding officer, Additional DIG Mohammad Asaduzzaman, disclosed the arrests at a press briefing.

Altab came under attack at about 8pm on Saturday after protesting the assault of an elderly auto-rickshaw garage owner. He sought refuge inside his garment factory, but the attackers followed him and assaulted both him and his son, Ariful. Doctors later declared Altab dead at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka.

Altab’s wife, Shiuli Parvin, filed the case with Savar Model Police Station, naming 15 people and accusing 20 others whose identities were not specified.
