Pritam Singh Retains Workers' Party Leadership After Secret Vote

Pritam Singh has successfully retained his leadership as secretary-general of Singapore's opposition Workers' Party (WP) after surviving a secret vote on his position. The vote took place during the party's special cadres conference on Sunday, June 28, which was called following a requisition from 25 cadre members late last year. These members had called for Singh to account for his conviction on charges of lying to a Committee of Privileges.

The conference also included the party's biennial elections. Alongside Singh's re-election as secretary-general, Ms. Sylvia Lim was re-elected as chair of the central executive committee (CEC). Twelve other members were elected to the party's top decision-making body, including prominent figures like Low Thia Khiang, former secretary-general, and current MPs such as Gerald Giam, He Ting Ru, and Jamus Lim.

Earlier this year, the CEC had issued Mr. Singh a letter of reprimand following an internal disciplinary process related to his court conviction. While a disciplinary panel accepted that Singh had contravened the party constitution, they assessed that his actions were not intended to act against the WP's principles. The conviction stemmed from his handling of a false statement made in parliament by former WP MP Raeesah Khan. In December 2025, Singapore's High Court upheld Singh's conviction on two counts of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee.

Following the court's decision, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong removed Mr. Singh from his role as Leader of the Opposition. The WP declined the subsequent invitation to nominate another MP for the position. Mr. Singh, who first became WP's secretary-general in 2018, had been re-elected unopposed in previous years.
