Profeco Study Reveals Top-Rated School Supplies for 2026-2027, Highlights Price Variations

As students prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has released a quality study on essential school supplies. The National Consumer Protection Laboratory rigorously tested 94 products, including notebooks, colored pencils, erasers, geometry sets, pencil sharpeners, and ballpoint pens.

The study found that 17 analyzed notebook models met standards for resistance, paper weight, and page count, with no defects in their finishes. However, Profeco highlighted considerable price differences between brands offering equivalent quality. For instance, a Scribe professional notebook cost 79.91 pesos, while a similar quality product from Stuk was priced at 49.72 pesos.

In the colored pencil category, all examined brands complied with mandatory labeling. Mechanical tests identified eight models, including Faber-Castell, Kores, and Staedtler, as particularly resistant. For white erasers, brands like Artesco, Kores, Maped, and Staedtler demonstrated high efficiency with minimal wear.

Profeco's analysis of geometry sets revealed that while all nine evaluated models received an "Excellent" rating for their scales, minor imperfections were noted in the finishes of all products. Specific issues with compass tracings were found in Mae and Wacky brands. The study also pointed out that the Maped geometry set, priced at 37.02 pesos, offered cost-benefit value comparable to higher-priced brands like Vinci (94.48 pesos).
