Prosecution appeals 27-year sentence in Dumulmeori murder case

A man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for the murder and subsequent disposal of his acquaintance's body in the scenic Dumulmeori area of Yangpyeong County. The Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office announced on Tuesday that they have filed an appeal against the first-instance ruling, deeming the sentence "unfairly lenient" considering the gravity of the offense.

The Seoul Northern District Court had previously handed down the 27-year sentence to the 35-year-old defendant, identified as Seong, on charges of murder and corpse abandonment. In addition to the prison term, Seong was ordered to wear a location-tracking electronic device for 15 years. The court cited Seong's actions post-murder, including eating fried chicken, going for a drive, and impersonating the victim in text messages to the victim's family, as evidence of his attempts to cover up the crime.

We think the sentence is absurd.

Seong was accused of killing the victim, identified as ㄱ씨, in their shared apartment in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, on January 14. The motive for the crime was reportedly related to the victim asking Seong for money to refuel a motorcycle. The victim's body was discovered on July 1, approximately six months after the murder, near the confluence of the Namhan and Seom Rivers at Dumulmeori.

Following the initial sentencing on July 23, the prosecution stated their intention to "make every effort to ensure that the defendant receives a sentence commensurate with the gravity of his crime in the appellate trial." The defendant's family also expressed their disbelief at the verdict, stating, "We think the sentence is absurd."
