Prosecutor's investigator arrested for $2 million rental deposit fraud

A prosecutor's investigator in South Korea faces trial for allegedly orchestrating a large-scale real estate fraud scheme, defrauding tenants of approximately 3 billion won (US$2 million).

The suspect, identified only as A, reportedly owned about 70 properties, primarily in the Hwaseong area, and failed to return security deposits to tenants whose leases expired. Many of the victims were identified as young employees of Samsung Electronics, starting their careers.

When tenants realized their deposits were not being returned after their leases ended, they filed complaints against A. However, by late September, A had already fled the country, departing for Cebu, Philippines. South Korean authorities invalidated his passport and issued an Interpol red notice.

After locating A at a hideout in Cebu in April, police worked with Philippine authorities to secure his extradition. He was forcibly repatriated to South Korea and subsequently arrested after a court issued an arrest warrant on July 24.
