Prosecutor's office investigates former governor Carlos Caicedo for alleged sexual abuse of a minor

Carlos Caicedo, a prominent political figure in Colombia who previously served as the governor of Magdalena and mayor of Santa Marta, is now the subject of a sexual abuse investigation by the Fiscalía General de la Nación. The probe stems from a complaint alleging sexual abuse against a minor.

The case, initially reported by Semana magazine, has been transferred from the Magdalena regional office to Bogotá. Prosecutors delegated to the Supreme Court are now handling the investigation, a move necessitated by Caicedo's former official position, which granted him specific legal protections at the time the alleged incidents occurred.

According to the complaint, the alleged events took place on July 17, 2023, at an apartment in Santa Marta. The accuser, the mother of an 8-year-old girl at the time, claims that Caicedo insisted she bring her daughter to meetings when he was governor. She reported finding her daughter in a compromised state after Caicedo spoke with the child alone in a room.

The investigation is examining various pieces of evidence, including chat logs, witness testimonies, and financial transactions. The accuser also alleges that Caicedo made threats and engaged in a pattern of intimidation and pressure that forced her and her daughter to relocate for safety reasons. The complaint further suggests the possibility of other minors having been involved in similar circumstances with Caicedo, a claim that is also under review by the Fiscalía.
