Prosecutor: "The boat was sucked under the ship"

New details have emerged regarding a fatal boat accident near Tjörn, Sweden, following the detention of the cargo ship's captain. The captain of the Norwegian vessel Misje Verde is being held on suspicion of causing the deaths of two people in a collision with a recreational boat.

According to the Swedish Prosecution Authority, the 90-meter-long cargo ship was traveling south from Uddevalla with a Swedish pilot on board when it collided with the smaller boat. Prosecutors claim the recreational boat was "hit, almost run over" by the Misje Verde. The collision tragically resulted in the deaths of a mother and her daughter, while a man and his son sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The captain was arrested shortly after the incident and subsequently detained by the Gothenburg District Court on Sunday. He is suspected on probable cause of manslaughter. The court cited the risk of flight as an additional reason for the detention. A potential indictment is expected by August 14.

The Misje Verde was en route to open waters when the accident occurred southeast of Tjörn. The investigation into the precise circumstances of the collision is ongoing.
