Protest in Kruševac Over Construction at Slobodište Memorial Site

A protest, "Let's Defend Slobodište," took place in Kruševac as residents and students voiced strong opposition to a planned exhibition park. The proposed park, featuring a Ramonda sculpture adorned with military equipment, is slated for construction on land belonging to the Slobodište memorial complex. Participants argue that this development would irrevocably damage the integrity of the memorial site. Slobodište is a place of profound historical significance, where 1,650 people were executed by Nazi forces during World War II. The complex was designed by the renowned architect Bogdan Bogdanović in 1965.

The protesters believe that a location more appropriate for an exhibition of military equipment should be found. The demonstration was organized via social media by Kruševac students who are currently engaged in a blockade. The event began with a procession through the city center, led by students, culminating at the Slobodište complex. There, a forum was held to discuss the memorial's importance and the current situation.
