Protests erupt in Ukraine as Zelenskyy meets military leaders amid defense shake-up

Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and other cities have seen thousands take to the streets in protests against the country's defense leadership, marking the largest public demonstrations since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022. The unrest stems from the recent dismissal of young reformer Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister and demands for the removal of the army's commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened a meeting with several high-ranking military commanders, including potential replacements for Syrskyi, in an apparent effort to quell the rising discontent. The protests have exposed deep rifts within the defense establishment concerning the strategy to counter Russia's advances, particularly as the conflict intensifies. Critics, including members of civil society, soldiers, and lawmakers, have voiced concerns over Syrskyi's perceived Soviet-style command and casualty-heavy tactics.

Among those meeting with Zelenskyy were Mykhailo Drapartiy, commander of the Joint Forces, and Volodymyr Horbatiuk, deputy chief of the General Staff, representing a younger generation of officers shaped by combat experience against Russian forces. Also present were Oleh Apostol, commander of the Air Assault Forces, and three army corps commanders: Andriy Biletskyi, Ihor Obolenskyi, and Denis Prokopenko.

Kirilo Budanov, Zelenskyy's chief of staff, called for unity and restraint, assuring that public sentiments were heard and that results would follow. A poll by Gradus Research indicated that 61% of Ukrainians opposed Fedorov's dismissal. While Fedorov reportedly discussed "other roles" with Zelenskyy, he is said to be willing to return only as defense minister. Protest organizers have issued an ultimatum, threatening a general strike if Syrskyi is not dismissed and Fedorov not reinstated by July 24.
