PSD conditions vote on salary law: 'Only if union amendments are accepted'

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Romania will not automatically endorse projects during the Parliament's extraordinary session, emphasizing that their votes will depend on serving the interests of Romanians. PSD President Sorin Grindeanu announced that the party will support the salary law only if amendments proposed by trade unions are accepted.

Grindeanu, in a Facebook post, stated that the extraordinary session should address the current government's "inability and undue delays" in attracting funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and resolve urgent issues he believes are being ignored by the caretaker prime minister. "Romanians sent us to represent them. Therefore, PSD is not a party that automatically says 'yes.' We will not endorse Bolojan's mistakes, nor will we vote under pressure," the PSD leader declared.

The PSD will back only those projects that serve the public interest, rejecting reforms that could negatively impact public sector employees. "The Salary Law will be voted on by PSD only if the amendments formulated by trade union organizations are accepted. Reform cannot be done against those who work. Reform cannot mean income reductions for doctors, teachers, or military personnel," Grindeanu wrote.

The party also indicated conditional support for other legislative initiatives. They will vote for amendments to the Administrative Code, the law rewarding performance for ANAF and Customs Authority employees, and the law on decarbonizing the heating and cooling sector, provided their respective amendments and those from UDMR are included. Regarding the Urbanism Code, PSD will support it only if the results of the Bucharest referendum are respected, transferring the authority for issuing building permits to the Capital City Hall starting next term. Grindeanu stressed that this change cannot be applied during the term of a mayor currently under investigation for suspected involvement in issuing building permits.

Furthermore, Grindeanu stated that the Integrity Law will be passed by PSD only in the form agreed upon with the National Integrity Agency (ANI) and in line with European Court of Justice decisions. "PSD will not support changes that weaken ANI's attributions or create loopholes for USR leaders who have legal problems," he asserted. The PSD also seeks to introduce additional legislative initiatives during the extraordinary session, including extending the reduced VAT rate of 9% for housing until October 1, implementing measures to temper fuel prices, and unblocking positions within the healthcare system.
