PSD Demands PNL Withdraw Support for Bucharest Mayor Ciucu Amid Corruption Charges | Adevărul (RO)

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) is calling on the National Liberal Party (PNL) to immediately revoke its political backing for Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu following his indictment on corruption charges. PSD argues that PNL must adhere to the same integrity principles it has long advocated for, applying them to its own party members.

Ciucu, who also serves as PNL's deputy leader, is accused of bribery. Prosecutors allege that in late 2025, individuals involved in a real estate project offered Ciucu undue benefits, including advertising and electoral consulting services. These services were reportedly intended to support his political and electoral activities during his tenure as mayor of Sector 6.

As such, after Mayor Ciprian Ciucu was placed under judicial supervision on bribery charges, the PNL leadership must urgently suspend him from all positions held within the party and withdraw political support for him to exercise the function of general mayor of the Capital.

PSD's statement emphasizes that integrity standards should be universally applied. The party is urging PNL to suspend Ciucu from all party positions and withdraw its political support for his mayoral role. PSD insists Ciucu should step down from his public office to protect the institution's image, mirroring the actions they claim he expected from others in similar situations.

PSD stated that Ciucu must withdraw from politics until a final acquittal, asserting that the presumption of innocence does not justify a "convicted person in public office."
