Public housing project breaks ground near Toronto's Trinity Bellwoods Park

Construction is now underway for a new rent-controlled housing project on city-owned land adjacent to Toronto's Trinity Bellwoods Park. The development aims to address the city's pressing need for affordable housing.

Mayor Olivia Chow, alongside federal officials, marked the milestone at the construction site. She highlighted that the project will deliver 74 new homes, with a significant number of these units designated as affordable and family-sized, offering two or three bedrooms. "Today, we’re turning City-owned land into new rental housing, including affordable and family-sized homes," Chow stated.

The initiative is a partnership between the City of Toronto and the federal government's Build Canada Homes program. "By working with Build Canada Homes, we’re building the housing Toronto needs so people who work here can afford to live here. Together, we’re delivering a more affordable and caring city for everyone," the mayor added.

The site for the new development was previously a city-owned parking lot. Toronto's CreateTO division is leading the construction efforts. This project is part of a broader federal commitment to increasing the supply of affordable rental housing in Toronto, with previous announcements detailing substantial investments in such initiatives.
