Pursuit staff member injured after Ice Odyssey vehicle rolls at Columbia Icefield

A Pursuit employee has been released from hospital after an Ice Odyssey vehicle rolled backward and down a hill at the Columbia Icefield near Jasper, Alberta.

The employee was conducting an operational maintenance check when the all-terrain vehicle left the road at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, the company said. The man was the only person involved, and no one else occupied the vehicle. He was taken to hospital with injuries that were initially unknown.

Stuart Back, Pursuit’s Canadian chief operating officer, said the employee had just been released and was recovering. “He’s actually just been just been released from hospital, which is great news, positive sign,” Back said. “May require further care but is on the mend, so to speak, having just been released.”

The Ice Odyssey vehicles, also known as “Fat Trucks,” carry tourists across the Athabasca Glacier. The Columbia Icefield stretches across the Alberta-British Columbia boundary.

Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety department has taken over the investigation. Pursuit said it would not speculate about the cause while authorities review what happened. The company canceled tours until at least Thursday and offered customers refunds or the chance to rebook. The separately operated Columbia Icefield Skywalk remains open.

The rollover follows a fatal 2020 crash at the same broader tourist attraction, when an Ice Explorer bus lost control. Three people died and 14 suffered serious injuries. A judge later attributed that crash to a “catastrophic braking issue.”
