Pyrenees Wildfire Burns 100 Hectares Near Pic du Midi, Not Fully Contained

A wildfire continues to burn in the French Pyrenees, having scorched about 100 hectares of mountainside near the Pic du Midi over the past twelve days. While the blaze has not threatened any residential areas, it remains "not totally under control," according to fire officials.

The fire ignited on July 8 in the Glère valley, high above the tourist town of Barèges in the Hautes-Pyrénées region. Although the flames had been relatively calm in recent days, a resurgence driven by wind prompted firefighters to deploy an water-bombing helicopter on Monday morning.

Access to the Glère valley has been restricted due to the ongoing firefighting efforts. Firefighters are urging hikers to exercise extreme caution, particularly due to the potential presence of emergency vehicles on the trails. The terrain is described as "extremely steep," complicating containment efforts.

A small team of about ten firefighters is monitoring the fire. Despite the challenging conditions and the fire's persistence, officials have reassured the public that there is "not a huge amount of human or material risk" involved. However, the fire's proximity to the Pic du Midi, a popular tourist and scientific site, highlights the ongoing environmental challenges in the region.
