Qualifier Krueger celebrates July 4 with Wimbledon victory

Qualifier Ashlyn Krueger marked American Independence Day with a decisive 6-3 6-2 victory over Ukraine's Daria Snigur in the third round of Wimbledon. Krueger, currently ranked 102nd in the world, secured her win on Saturday, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, while many of her compatriots at home were celebrating the holiday.

Krueger was one of eight American singles players competing in London. However, not all American players found success on the day. In another match, Emma Navarro, seeded 23rd, was defeated by the 12th seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine with a score of 6-2 4-6 6-1. In the men's draw, 23-year-old Zachary Svajda, making his Wimbledon debut, managed to take a set from fifth-seeded Alex de Minaur before ultimately losing the match 6-2 5-7 6-2 6-4.

Anticipation was also building for the appearance of two of the most successful American players, sisters Venus and Serena Williams, who were scheduled to play in the doubles later on Saturday. They were set to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra of Colombia and Argentina, respectively. The Williams sisters, aged 46 and 44, last competed together in doubles at the 2022 U.S. Open. They have a storied history at Wimbledon, having won six titles between 2000 and 2016, contributing to their combined total of 22 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals.
