Quang Ninh to build $2 billion bridge connecting Co To and Thanh Lan islands

Quang Ninh province has approved a significant infrastructure project, a bridge connecting Co To island to Thanh Lan island, with an estimated cost of nearly 2 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately $2 billion USD).

The 2.855-kilometer bridge, including its approach roads, aims to establish direct road access between the two islands. Currently, travel between Co To and Thanh Lan relies on water transport, which is often subject to weather disruptions. The project is managed by the Co To Special Administrative Area's Investment and Construction Project Management Board, with funding from the provincial budget and the special administrative area's budget.

The bridge, spanning about 2.3 kilometers over the sea, is designed to overcome a major obstacle for Thanh Lan island's development. Beyond its economic benefits, the new link is anticipated to bolster national defense and security. It will enhance the mobility of functional forces for island sovereignty protection, disaster response, search and rescue operations, and emergency management.

In addition to the bridge and roads, the project includes the development of technical infrastructure and public spaces at both ends. On Co To island, approximately 0.34 hectares will be dedicated to a lighthouse, service facilities, a public square, a coastal promenade, parking, and landscaping. Thanh Lan island will also feature a flagpole, a central square, walking paths, parking, and green spaces.

Construction is slated to begin after preparation in 2026, with implementation planned between 2027 and 2029. The completed bridge is expected to bring Thanh Lan island closer to the Co To center, thereby expanding tourism, services, and marine economic development opportunities for the region.
