The Queensland government has unveiled concept images for a parkland precinct intended to surround the 2032 Olympic stadium in Brisbane, aiming to address concerns over the loss of Victoria Park, the city's largest inner-city green space. However, opponents of the stadium's construction at the heritage-listed site, known as Barrambin to traditional owners, have dismissed the plans as a "fantasy vision" lacking crucial details. Critics argue the concept images overlook the practical necessities for accommodating large crowds, such as parking, roads, and transport links. The government asserts that its plan will preserve two-thirds of Victoria Park as green space, even after the construction of a 63,000-seat stadium and a new national aquatic center. The draft plan includes proposals for two pedestrian bridges over the Brisbane inner-city bypass and the expansion of the York's Hollow wetland by flooding existing football fields. A public amphitheater near the stadium is also proposed. Premier David Crisafulli described the precinct as a "state-shaping" legacy that Queenslanders will enjoy for generations, likening its potential impact to that of South Bank after Expo '88. Despite these assurances, critics like Sue Bremner of Save Victoria Park called the plans "misleading" and an attempt to distract from potential budget overruns. Bremner highlighted logistical challenges, stating it is "one of the most complex, expensive and poorly connected sites in Brisbane to build sporting venues," and questioned the absence of details regarding parking, roads, and public transport connections.
