Quibdó hospital urgently requests medicines and supplies after Colombia earthquake

The San Francisco de Asís Hospital in Quibdó, Colombia, is facing a critical shortage of essential medical supplies and medications following a series of earthquakes that struck the region on August 10. The hospital has issued an urgent plea for donations to maintain its services for the growing number of injured individuals.

According to the hospital, the influx of patients requiring urgent care has depleted its stock of vital items. The list of urgently needed supplies includes sterile compresses, various types of surgical sutures, orthopedic plaster bandages, blood units and blood products, clinical laboratory reagents, and antivenom serum. The hospital stressed that these items are crucial for the continued operation of its emergency, surgery, hospitalization, and clinical laboratory departments.

Among the specific medications requested are alfametildopa, allopurinol, alprazolam, amikacin, amiodarone, amitriptyline, amlodipine, and amoxicillin. Cardiovascular medications such as sodium nitroprusside, norepinephrine, omeprazole, ondansetron, oxytocin, paracetamol, penicillin, piperacillin/tazobactam, polymyxin B, prednisolone, propofol, propranolol, and ranitidine are also listed as high priorities. The hospital also requires antivenom serum and magnesium sulfate.

The national government reported over 160 fatalities from the earthquake, with rescue and relief efforts underway in affected areas. The hospital's appeal underscores the significant strain on healthcare infrastructure in the aftermath of the disaster, highlighting the immediate need for external support to address the ongoing medical crisis.
