Quito's 12 de Octubre avenue rehabilitation to cause 70 days of traffic disruption

Quito will see significant traffic changes starting July 27, 2026, as the 12 de Octubre avenue undergoes rehabilitation. The project, scheduled to last 70 days, will focus on the stretch between Cristóbal Colón and Tarqui streets. This major thoroughfare in the north-central part of the city is part of a larger plan to renew 15 kilometers of streets in the La Floresta area.

The rehabilitation is strategically timed to coincide with school holidays in July and August, aiming to minimize disruption during a period of lower vehicle circulation. Work will proceed in phases, starting with the section between Cristóbal Colón and Madrid streets, followed by the Madrid to Patria segment, and concluding with Patria to Tarqui. This phased approach ensures the 70-day completion target is met.

Over 39,000 residents in La Floresta, La Vicentina, El Dorado, El Belén, Guápulo, and Mariscal Sucre are expected to benefit from the improved infrastructure. The Metropolitan Public Company of Mobility and Public Works will coordinate with various city agencies, including the Secretariat of Mobility and the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT), to manage traffic flow effectively.

Commuters will need to adjust their routes, with particular attention to alternative options. Private vehicles can use avenues such as Patria, Tarqui, 6 de Diciembre, La Coruña, Cristóbal Colón, Madrid, Alfredo Mena Caamaño, José Tamayo, and Ladrón de Guevara. Public transport will continue to operate along Toledo, La Coruña, and Ladrón de Guevara streets. Additionally, parallel rehabilitation work on other streets in La Floresta, including Madrid, Guipúzcoa, and Pontevedra, is ongoing and will be progressively opened to traffic.
