Rab arrests madrasa teacher over 14-year-old student’s death

Rapid Action Battalion arrested a madrasa teacher accused in the death of his 14-year-old residential student in Habiganj’s Madhabpur upazila.

The arrestee, 24-year-old Mahbub Alam Mahi, teaches at a madrasa in Sultanpur village. Rab-9 detained him early today in Natpara, in Moulvibazar Sadar, following a tip-off, said its Sylhet media officer, Additional Superintendent of Police KM Shahidul Islam Sohag.

A case was filed at Madhabpur Police Station on May 28, 2025, under sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Penal Code. According to the case statement, several students, including Ashiqul Islam Joni, had protested against the madrasa authorities over alleged financial irregularities.

The statement alleges that Mahi severely beat Ashiqul and poisoned him on April 22. The student was taken first to a local hospital and then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died the same day. Rab said Mahi had been hiding since the incident and handed him over to Madhabpur police after the arrest. Officer-in-charge Sohel Rana said a Habiganj court later sent the accused to jail.
