Rafael in talks to set up Iron Dome interceptor production line in India - report

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the Israeli manufacturer of the Iron Dome missile defense system, is reportedly in discussions with Indian defense companies to establish a local production line for the system's interceptors. This potential collaboration could significantly boost India's defense manufacturing capabilities and expand Rafael's global reach.

Currently, Rafael produces Iron Dome interceptors at its facilities in northern Israel. Last year, a missile production line also became operational in the United States through a partnership with Raytheon, which supplies interceptors for the U.S. Marines' new air defense system and can bolster Israeli production if needed. The proposed Indian facility would serve multiple strategic purposes for Rafael.

Beyond serving the Indian military, which has already invested billions in Israeli air defense systems like the Barak 8, production in India is expected to lower manufacturing costs and provide an additional layer of production resilience. It would also enhance Rafael's standing with the Indian government, which typically mandates local manufacturing and export capabilities from foreign defense suppliers to bolster its own economy.

The move comes as global demand for advanced air defense systems surges, partly driven by increased missile and drone activity in regions like the Middle East. Rafael's Transportation Minister Miri Regev recently confirmed the deployment of an Israeli Iron Dome battery in the Emirates, which reportedly helped intercept threats. Establishing a production base in India could not only meet domestic demand but also facilitate exports to other nations, potentially circumventing political sensitivities associated with direct sales from Israel.
