Ransom note claims Nancy Guthrie is dead, US media reports

A ransom note connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC's Today show host Savannah Guthrie, claims she has died, according to U.S. media reports citing law enforcement sources. The 84-year-old is believed to have been kidnapped or otherwise taken against her will from her home outside Tucson in early February. Blood was discovered near the doorstep of her residence, prompting an extensive search. Volunteers and search teams have scoured the nearby desert terrain, but no trace of Ms. Guthrie has been found. Some media outlets had previously reported receiving ransom notes related to the case. CNN reported that one note stated Nancy Guthrie was dead, and that her abductors did not intend to kill her but she died shortly after her disappearance. CNN stated it was aware of the contents of one note, and a local TV station had received two. CNN and the station reportedly agreed to withhold the notes' contents to authenticate any future communications with the kidnapper(s). The Pima County Sheriff's Department declined to comment on the note's contents, and the FBI did not respond to requests for comment. The Guthrie family has not made any public statements regarding the notes. Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show in April, months after her mother went missing.
