Ransom notes released in Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case

Six months after Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished in Arizona, investigators have released the ransom notes purportedly sent by her abductors. The Pima County Sheriff's Department posted copies of two email messages online, appealing to the public for information.

We are truly sorry

The first note, sent days after the 84-year-old Guthrie was reported missing on February 1, demanded $4 million in bitcoin within three days. It warned that the ransom would increase to $6 million if the deadline was missed and stated, "she will be killed." The message also included details to authenticate it, such as her wristwatch being left on her bed and a backyard floodlight being destroyed.

A second note, received on February 6, delivered a more grim message. It stated, "We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart-related. She is buried in nature now." The note concluded with, "We want your family to know this and hope you all can find peace. We are truly sorry."

Savannah Guthrie, in a recent video appeal, urged the kidnappers to "do the right thing" and "tell us where to look for her." Nancy Guthrie, who had limited mobility, was last seen alive on January 31. Relatives found her home empty of essential belongings, with blood found on the front porch later confirmed by DNA tests to be hers.
