'Rapid, rigorous investigations': NTA revamps top ranks, creates new roles to probe exam malpractices

The National Testing Agency (NTA) in India is undertaking a significant overhaul of its top ranks, establishing specialized leadership positions to address critical areas such as cybersecurity, test-center operations, and vigilance. A key focus of these new roles will be the rigorous investigation of examination malpractice, including paper leaks and fraud, and close coordination with national agencies like the CBI, IB, ED, and state police forces.

In recent advertisements issued on July 25, the NTA announced openings for General Manager positions in Test Centre Network & Operations (GM-TCNO), Information Security (Chief Information Security Officer/CISO), and Vigilance, Investigation & Forensics (GM-VIF). These appointments are part of the NTA's ongoing institutional reforms, prompted by significant controversies, most notably the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak scandal.

The agency has stated that the creation of these specialist positions represents a concrete step toward rebuilding its institutional capacity and reducing its reliance on contractual and outsourced personnel. The GM-VIF role, in particular, is designed to lead "rapid, rigorous investigations" into alleged malpractices. This position will also be responsible for developing a robust digital forensics system to track cyber threats, analyze social media intelligence, and examine financial trails. The officer will serve as the NTA's primary liaison with various investigative and law enforcement agencies across India.

For the GM-TCNO position, the NTA has outlined "zero-disruption exam delivery" across numerous centers as a primary objective. This role will also involve expanding the test-center network into smaller cities and improving candidate facilities. The GM-CISO will be tasked with architecting an "impenetrable security posture" for the NTA's technology systems and establishing a 24x7 Security Operations Centre (SOC), ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.
