Rare Early Recording of The Beatles' 'Day Tripper' Released

A rare glimpse into the genesis of a rock anthem has emerged with the release of the "Day Tripper (Songwriting Work Tape)." This early recording captures John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the nascent stages of crafting the iconic 1965 Beatles hit.

The work tape, recorded at Lennon's Kenwood home in Surrey, reveals the song in a much earlier form, predating its famous riff. It showcases the legendary songwriting duo experimenting with an older folk melody Lennon had written the previous month. The recording is notable for the palpable sense of enjoyment and camaraderie between Lennon and McCartney as they developed the song together.

Laughter can be heard on the tape, highlighting the collaborative spirit and the sheer fun they experienced as a writing team. Lennon even comments on the high quality of the sound captured on the tape. This raw, unpolished version offers a fascinating contrast to the polished final track, which was completed during an intensive eight-hour studio session.

This "Songwriting Work Tape" is set to be featured on the upcoming special edition of The Beatles' seminal 1965 album, 'Rubber Soul.' The expanded collection promises extensive insights into the album's creation, including 24 early takes from studio sessions, 20 of which are previously unreleased, alongside three unreleased home demos. The special edition, remixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell, will be available on October 2nd in various formats.
