RAV4 takes big steps forward, especially as a plug-in hybrid

Toyota is preparing to release the sixth generation of its popular RAV4 SUV, a model that has been a trailblazer in its segment for over 30 years. The new generation aims to continue the success of its predecessor, which was the world's best-selling car model in 2025. The upcoming RAV4 will be built on the same GA-K platform and share similar dimensions and the 2.5-liter gasoline engine as the outgoing model.

Significant design changes are evident, including a new "Hammerhead" design at the front with arched headlights and more elongated, ribbed taillights at the rear, featuring the model name between them. The interior boasts a more horizontal and angular design, with a dashboard lowered by four centimeters to improve forward visibility. A 12.9-inch infotainment screen tops the dashboard, complemented by physical buttons for climate control and a volume knob. Material choices are generally good, though the center console's storage compartment and gear selector have drawn minor criticism for their feel and legibility in sunlight.

The new RAV4 will be available in Sweden as both a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. A new front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid variant will be introduced, but it is not initially slated for the Swedish market. Swedish models will feature the i-AWD system, with an electric motor powering the rear wheels. The plug-in hybrid technology is enhanced with a larger battery pack (22.7 kWh compared to the previous 14.5 kWh), derived from Toyota's electric vehicles. This allows for an estimated electric-only range of up to 133 kilometers (WLTP) and supports home charging at 11 kW (up from 6.6 kW) and DC fast charging up to 50 kW.

With an additional three horsepower in system output, the plug-in hybrid version is expected to be the strongest performer and potentially the best-seller in Sweden, surpassing the regular hybrid.
