Rawalpindi police to face terrorism cases if an under-trial prisoner escapes

Rawalpindi police have decided to register cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act against responsible officials if an under-trial prisoner escapes from custody.

City Police Officer Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera issued the instructions while chairing a meeting at Police Headquarters on Sunday. The meeting brought together senior police officers, station chiefs and officials responsible for custody facilities at Adiala and the courts.

The new guidelines require officers to use proper handcuffs. They prohibit the use of ropes or iron chains when accused people appear before courts. Police officials also may not use private cars or motorcycles to transport a suspect, even when only one person is being presented in court.

Escapes by under-trial prisoners topped the meeting’s agenda. Officers also discussed a special anti-corruption campaign and were instructed to focus on key responsibilities, including security duties.
