Real Madrid run out of firepower against Betis and suffer first defeat

Real Madrid’s first defeat of the season came against Betis, despite the visitors creating the better chances. Troy Parrott’s opportunist finish decided the match, while goalkeeper Valles delivered the decisive moment at the other end by saving Kylian Mbappé’s penalty in stoppage time.

Betis began with a high press, but Madrid controlled the opening minutes and pinned the home side near its own area. Valles produced an early save to turn away a close-range effort from Huijsen in the 11th minute.

Madrid came even closer four minutes later. Vinicius struck the post from close range after finding the goal unguarded, although the angle was narrow.

Betis grew into the match during the middle part of the first half by keeping possession. Isco dropped deeper and linked with Antony, who looked the most inspired of his teammates. Antony then set up Cucho Hernández after an acrobatic control, but the Colombian’s first-time effort flew just wide of the post.
