Real Madrid suffer first defeat of the season against Real Betis

Real Madrid’s perfect start to the 2026-27 LaLiga season ended at the Benito Villamarín, where Real Betis won 1-0 through a late goal from Troy Parrott.

José Mourinho’s side had won its first three league matches, but Betis took all three points on September 4. The decisive moment came in the 81st minute after Nelson Deossa won a header from a corner and directed it toward goal. Thibaut Courtois stopped the initial effort, but his clearance fell near the left post, where Parrott reacted first and scored.

Real Madrid had chances to equalize. Five minutes before Valles saved Mbappé’s penalty, Carlos Espí scored with a bicycle kick, but referee Alberto Fernández ruled out the goal for offside. In the fourth minute of added time, Valles then blocked Mbappé’s right-footed penalty. The rebound presented another chance, but Mbappé could not connect.

Mbappé had scored a hat-trick against Real Sociedad and once against Málaga in his previous two matches. Despite the defeat, Real Madrid remain second with nine points, behind Barcelona and ahead of Betis on goal difference. Betis also have nine points after wins over Real Sociedad and Valencia, a 5-2 loss to Levante, and the victory over Madrid.

Both teams are scheduled to begin their Champions League campaigns on September 8. Betis will face Lille, while Real Madrid will play Inter Milan.
