Recoleta renames Río de Janeiro Street as Republic of Korea

Río de Janeiro Street no longer carries that name in Recoleta. From Friday, Sept. 4, the Patronato neighborhood artery became Republic of Korea, a change intended to strengthen the municipality’s relationship with the local Korean community.

The renaming recognizes the community’s history and contribution to Patronato, a traditional commercial district where Korean residents and businesses have played an important role in the area’s development.

The municipality has been built through the contributions of different communities, and the Korean community is a fundamental part of our identity, our diversity and the development of Barrio Patronato.

Recoleta Mayor Fares Jadue said the municipality had been built through the contributions of different communities. He described the Korean community as a fundamental part of Recoleta’s identity, diversity and development.

South Korean Ambassador Hak Je Kim said the decision carried deep meaning for Korean residents. “It is much more than an administrative decision, it is a source of pride for our community and an opportunity to continue contributing to the development of this area,” he said.
