Record inspections and penalties in Saturn after mass food poisoning

The food-poisoning incident that sent 58 tourists from Hotel Neko in Saturn for medical care has triggered a sweeping inspection campaign across the seaside resort.

At the direction of ANPC President Csaba Lajos Békési, six inspectors from the Constanța Consumer Protection Commissioner’s Office checked 53 businesses between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. The inspections covered hotels, restaurants and leisure facilities, with particular attention to locations that tourists had criticized for accommodation, hygiene, food, service quality or safety.

At Hotel Neko, operated by SC AMI HOLIDAYS SRL, inspectors found major deficiencies in the food-production area. They temporarily stopped the hotel’s services, withdrew non-compliant products from sale and ordered refunds for affected customers.

The campaign produced fines totaling 391,500 lei. Inspectors also permanently withdrew products worth 27,866 lei and temporarily suspended services at 12 businesses. Five hotels were temporarily closed: Hotel Neko, Hotel Cupidon, Hotel Cleopatra, Hotel Narcis and Hotel Mureș.

The problems extended beyond food. Inspectors reported poorly maintained and inadequately sanitized rooms and common areas, including damaged or stained mattresses, torn sheets, stained pillows and mold on wooden bed components. They also found damaged walls and doors, rust, outdated furniture, corroded bathroom fixtures, unclean air-conditioner filters, damaged insect screens, leaks and other unhygienic conditions in bathrooms.
