Record rain near Tokyo strands thousands, causes deaths

Thousands of travelers remain stranded at Tokyo's Narita International Airport as record rainfall continues to batter the region, causing severe flooding and transportation chaos. The deluge, which saw over 360 millimeters of rain in 24 hours in parts of Chiba Prefecture, has disrupted power to homes and claimed at least four lives, with one person still missing.

Narita Airport, located about 60 kilometers east of Tokyo, is grappling with the aftermath, with approximately 7,000 people reportedly stranded due to transport disruptions. Airport staff are providing blankets, water, and snacks to passengers who are sleeping in the terminal buildings. Despite the severe conditions, all flights are scheduled to depart and arrive on Friday.

Governor Toshihito Kumagai of Chiba Prefecture described the situation as "extremely unusual," stating he had never experienced anything like it. Soldiers have been deployed to assist in rescue and search efforts across the affected areas. In the hardest-hit city of Chiba, hundreds of residents spent the night in public buildings converted into temporary evacuation centers.

Major highways in Chiba have been closed due to the floodwaters, and train services have been suspended in several locations, although some services between Narita Airport and Tokyo have resumed. The extreme weather has significantly impacted travel during one of Japan's busiest holiday periods.
