Red Alert declared in Arauco, Chile, as Pichilo River overflows

Chile's National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred) has issued a Red Alert for the Arauco commune in the Biobío Region following the overflow of the Pichilo River. This elevated alert replaces a Yellow Alert previously declared for a river surge earlier on Sunday, signaling an increased risk to the population situated near the riverbanks.

The decision to raise the alert level comes after the Pichilo River's monitoring station registered a significant increase in its flow, reaching a level that poses a substantial danger to those in close proximity to the waterway. Senapred made the declaration in coordination with the Regional Presidential Delegation of Biobío.

The Red Alert will remain in effect until conditions improve and allow for its modification or cancellation. It authorizes the implementation of crucial emergency measures, including preventive evacuations, the deployment of specialized machinery and personnel, and the mobilization of essential emergency resources. The aim is to ensure all necessary and available resources are activated to effectively respond to the emergency and mitigate its potential impacts.

As part of its proactive response, Senapred has also activated the SAE (Emergency Alert System) messaging to warn residents about the dangers associated with the river's overflow. This measure reinforces recommendations for the public as the emergency situation evolves.
