Red Bull Flugtag Returns to Istanbul, Featuring Student-Designed Flying Machines

Red Bull Flugtag is making a comeback in Istanbul after a four-year hiatus, transforming Caddebostan Sahili into a stage for youthful innovation and daring engineering feats on August 23. This year's event highlights the creativity of students, with over 60% of the 32 selected teams hailing from prominent Turkish universities.

Students from institutions such as Istanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University, Boğaziçi University, Yıldız Technical University, Galatasaray University, and Eskişehir Technical University are set to showcase their human-powered flying machines. These creations are born from a blend of engineering prowess and popular culture inspiration, ranging from large character designs to machines themed around music, cinema, and technology.

The competition emphasizes that success isn't solely measured by flight distance. Teams will be judged on the creativity of their aircraft's design, their performance on the ramp, and the distance covered. In cases of ties, creativity and performance scores will take precedence, underscoring the event's focus on imaginative and engaging presentations.

First held in Vienna in 1992, Red Bull Flugtag has been organized over 185 times globally. Turkey has previously hosted the event in 2008, 2010, 2013, 2019, and 2022. This year's iteration promises a vibrant festival atmosphere with colorful costumes, unconventional vehicles, and entertaining stage shows, culminating in teams launching themselves into the void from the ramp with the iconic "Fly… 2… 1!" countdown.
