Red Cross Flanders appeals for blood donations amid critical shortages

The Red Cross in Flanders has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, warning that blood supplies are under severe strain. While most blood types are low, the organization expressed particular concern over critically depleted reserves of O negative and B negative blood.

This shortage is described as an annual recurring issue, commonly referred to as a "summer dip." During the summer months, the number of blood donors typically decreases by 10 to 15 percent. This decline is attributed to potential donors being on vacation and postponing donations, as well as temporary exclusions for individuals returning from certain travel destinations.

The Red Cross highlighted that all blood types are currently facing challenges, but the need for O negative and B negative is most acute. O negative blood is especially valuable as it serves as the universal donor type, meaning it can be given to patients of any blood group. The scarcity of this type is therefore a significant cause for concern.

Donors with O negative or B negative blood are urged to donate, as their contribution can make a substantial difference. However, the organization stressed that donors for all other blood types are also welcome. Every donation is crucial for replenishing supplies and ensuring that patients receive the necessary care. Blood can be donated at 16 donor centers or at local collection drives, which continue to operate throughout the summer vacation period.
