Reds' Fireballer Greene to Undergo TJ Surgery, Season Over

Cincinnati Reds' hard-throwing pitcher Hunter Greene is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, a procedure that will bring his current season to an immediate halt. The news comes after Greene experienced elbow soreness just a month after returning to the mound in July.

Greene had previously undergone surgery earlier this season to remove a loose body from his right elbow. His return to the majors was short-lived, as the persistent elbow pain has now led to the decision for season-ending surgery. This will be the second Tommy John surgery of his career, with the first occurring in 2019 while he was in the minor leagues.

The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow, and the recovery timeline is estimated to be between 12 and 18 months. This lengthy rehabilitation period means Greene could miss the entirety of the next MLB season, a significant blow to both the player and the Reds.

Greene, who recently celebrated his 27th birthday, had a limited season in 2024. He appeared in just five games, pitching 27.2 innings and recording 33 strikeouts. His record stood at 2 wins and 2 losses, with a 6.83 ERA. Despite the high ERA, his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) was 3.55, and his ERA+ was 63, indicating he was below league average in performance this year.
