Reese Witherspoon describes herself as “curious by nature, a storyteller by vocation.” That self-portrait, posted to an Instagram account with more than 30 million followers, captures the path of an actress who began working at seven and appeared in her first commercial as a child.

No one in her family knew the world of lights and cameras. Witherspoon became the first to choose a vocation outside the professions familiar to her relatives, then built a Hollywood career that expanded into a business empire valued at $440 million. Forbes has described her as one of the richest self-made women in the United States.

Her story began in childhood. Born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon on March 22, 1976, in New Orleans, she spent her first five years in Germany, at the Vispold military base, because of her father’s army posting. The family later settled in Nashville, where her father worked as an ear, nose and throat specialist. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Witherspoon, earned a doctorate in pediatric nursing and taught nursing for 35 years at Tennessee State University.

In a 2017 interview, she said her mother taught her that passion can transform work into something that does not feel like work.
