Refuse heaps to disappear soon in Lagos, LAWMA assures residents

Lagos residents can expect a significant reduction in the unsightly waste backlog plaguing the state, as the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) rolls out new measures to tackle the growing refuse problem. The assurance comes as the agency commissions rehabilitated access roads and newly constructed disposal platforms at the Olusosun Disposal Facility in Ojota.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA's Managing Director, stated that these interventions are designed to streamline operations and enhance the efficiency of waste evacuation across Lagos. The expansion of the Olusosun facility will provide crucial temporary space, enabling LAWMA to address the accumulation of refuse on the state's roads. Gbadegesin expressed confidence that the improvements would lead to a visible clearing of waste within days.

"By opening this place, we’ve created more space. Over the next few days there won’t be refuse on our roads," Gbadegesin declared, emphasizing the immediate impact expected from the facility's upgrades. He noted that the reclaimed portion of the facility will serve as a temporary holding area during the ongoing transition process, aiming to normalize waste disposal operations.

However, Gbadegesin stressed that achieving and maintaining a cleaner Lagos is a shared responsibility. He implored residents to cease dumping waste on roadsides and unauthorized areas, urging them instead to utilize designated waste collection channels. Patronizing assigned Public Sector Participant (PSP) operators and ensuring prompt payment for services are key to supporting LAWMA's efforts. The agency also encourages residents to report any delays in refuse collection directly to LAWMA, reinforcing the need for community cooperation in sustaining a healthier environment.
