Relative: He wasn’t much of a threat

Relatives of Abraham Hackette, who was fatally shot by police in San Juan, claim they initially called officers for help during his mental health episode. The family stated they wanted police assistance to take Hackette to the St. Ann's Psychiatric Hospital.

However, police reports indicate that Hackette attacked responding officers with a knife, injuring one officer before he was shot multiple times. The incident occurred near his home on Farroe Terrace, leaving his family traumatized. Hackette's sister, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Express that her mother called the police because he was "having an episode" and she hoped he would receive an injection to calm him.

Our mother had initially called the police because he was having an episode. She wanted them to help take him to St. Ann’s (Psychiatric Hospital).

According to the sister, Hackette, the youngest of five children, was an outpatient at the psychiatric hospital. He had a previous incident where he attacked a relative and was sent to St. Ann's for evaluation, later being discharged with medication. The family expressed that they did not expect the situation to escalate to the point of Hackette's death.

Police reports detail that officers WPC Nakhid and PC David Noel responded to a disturbance call. Upon arrival, they observed Hackette armed with two knives and being chased by a group of men. When ordered to drop the weapons, Hackette allegedly lunged at PC Noel, cutting his hand and arm. During the pursuit, Hackette reportedly attempted to attack Noel again, leading the officer to discharge his service pistol. Hackette then fled into nearby bushes, and officers later encountered him again, armed with a knife, before he was shot.

I know in her head she was thinking they would just give him an injection (to sedate him) and take him away, so he didn’t harm anyone at the home or anyone nearby. But things just escalated and now Abraham is dead.
