Rennes: Young man critically injured after colliding with riot police van

A 22-year-old man is fighting for his life after a collision with a riot police van in Rennes, France. The incident, which took place on Friday, August 7, has prompted an investigation by the local prosecutor's office.

According to preliminary findings, the young man was riding a scooter and reportedly taunting the occupants of the CRS van. The van stopped, and as it later attempted a U-turn, the scooter rider swerved to avoid an officer who had exited the vehicle. The rider then continued at high speed, allegedly looking back to see if he was being followed.

Tragically, while looking back, the scooter rider failed to see the CRS van returning in the opposite direction at a reduced speed. Despite the van driver's attempt to avoid the impact, the scooter rider violently struck the vehicle. The investigation will involve interviewing all police officers present at the scene and seeking witnesses, including the driver of a car the scooter rider reportedly overtook just before the crash. Surveillance footage is also being reviewed.
