Renowned Nepali Mountaineer Nirmal Purja Dies in Broad Peak Avalanche

The world of high-altitude mountaineering is in shock following the death of Nirmal Purja, a celebrated and often controversial Nepali climber. Purja, known as Nims Dai, perished in a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak, a treacherous 8,047-meter summit. He was 43 years old.

The incident occurred on July 30 around 9:30 a.m. as Purja led a team of climbers at an altitude of 6,600 meters. A massive avalanche swept down the steep slopes between Camp 2 and Camp 3, tragically claiming the lives of Purja and nine other climbers. Their GPS tracks indicate a sudden fall of 800 meters.

Immediate rescue operations were launched, with teams from the neighboring K2 expedition rushing to assist. Helicopter attempts to reach the site were made, but severe weather conditions persisted for 48 hours, significantly complicating search and recovery efforts. Purja had gained international fame for his record-breaking "Project Possible" expedition, during which he climbed all 14 of the world's eight-thousanders in under seven months.
