Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja found dead in Pakistan avalanche

Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja has died in a significant avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan, his expedition company Elite Expeditions confirmed with deep sorrow. The company stated that other members of the expedition also lost their lives in the incident on the 8,047-meter (26,399-foot) mountain, the world's 12th highest, located in the Karakoram range.

The expedition included climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, and China. So far, the bodies of an American woman, an Omani woman, and a Nepali man have been recovered from the avalanche site and taken to a hospital for identification, according to regional Pakistani authorities. Rescue teams are continuing the difficult search for other victims.

It is with deep sorrow and a broken heart that we confirm that Nirmal Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak.

Purja, 43, was widely celebrated for his 2019 achievement of summiting all 14 of the world's highest mountains in a record-breaking period of just over six months. This remarkable feat was later chronicled in the 2021 Netflix documentary "14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible."

Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed that Purja's death has shaken the nation. He stated, "The physical journey of the deceased mountaineers has been cut short. But the story of their courage, willpower, and contribution will remain inspiring."
