Renowned Romanian Mathematician Florian Luca Dies at 57

The academic community in Romania and internationally mourns the death of Professor Florian Luca, a distinguished mathematician who passed away on July 28 in Germany at the age of 57. Luca, originally from Galați, was recognized as one of the most esteemed Romanian mathematicians of his generation.

Luca built an impressive career in mathematical research, holding a position at Syracuse University in New York. He also served as a visiting professor at prestigious universities across Europe, North America, and South America. Furthermore, he coordinated the Mexican national math olympiad team, contributing significantly to the development of mathematical research and the education of new generations of mathematicians.

On July 28, Professor Florian Luca passed away in Germany.

His academic affiliations included memberships in mathematics societies in Romania, the United States, and Mexico. The Library "V.A. Urechia" from Galați noted his passing, detailing his educational background from the "Vasile Alecsandri" High School in Galați and his mathematics degree from "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iași in 1992. He later earned his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan shared a heartfelt message, having known Luca since their youth through national mathematics programs. "Stunned by the sudden disappearance of Florian Luca," Dan wrote on social media. "We were roommates in the math team in 1985... Impressed by the intensity with which he lived mathematics in adulthood, just as I had known him at 15. A man who enjoyed life, places, people. May God rest his soul!"
