Reps dissolve ad-hoc committees

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has dissolved all its ad hoc committees, ending their activities with immediate effect.

A notice signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, said the decision followed earlier instructions for the committees to complete their assignments and submit reports within the required timeframe. Only two committees had requested and received two-week extensions, and those extensions had expired.

The notice reminded lawmakers that ad hoc committees are temporary bodies created for specific, time-limited mandates. “They are not intended to subsist indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were constituted,” it said.

The House cited Order Eighteen, Rule 11, Paragraph 5, of its Standing Orders, which sets limits for the submission of committee reports. “Having exceeded the time allotted, the continued existence of the Ad Hoc Committees is no longer tenable,” the notice said.

The dissolution took effect on Friday, 28 August 2026. Affected chairmen were instructed to forward all outstanding reports, records, working documents and other materials connected to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping. Members were also directed to cease all activities carried out in the name of the dissolved committees.
