Reps push for local content in defense procurement

Nigeria's House of Representatives Committee on Defence is set to champion the enforcement of the local content policy, urging government agencies to prioritize locally manufactured military hardware. This push aims to curb excessive spending on imported defense equipment and bolster the nation's indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

A couple of years ago, we had a document showing the amount of money being spent on procuring items that Nigerians are already producing. I said we must stop this. We must encourage our indigenous producers.

Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, represented by his Chief of Staff Benjamin Ekeyi, emphasized this commitment during the launch of AEGIS-X 2.0, an armored vehicle developed by Nigerian firm X-Shield Solutions Company Limited. Benson highlighted that Nigeria spends substantial amounts on importing defense items that are already produced locally, a practice the committee intends to halt.

There was a presidential order recommending that unless a product cannot be found in Nigeria, every military institution and government agency should patronise local producers. We intend to reignite that and push it forward so that our Armed Forces can patronise companies like this.

"We must encourage our indigenous producers," Benson stated, referencing a past document that revealed the extent of money spent on imported goods. The committee plans to revive and strengthen a presidential directive that mandates ministries, departments, and agencies to prioritize locally made products when available. This directive aims to ensure that the armed forces and other government institutions patronize companies like X-Shield Solutions.

I have seen the factory and the work they are doing. Having travelled and seen similar products abroad, I can tell you they stand even better than some of what we import.

Ekeyi further commended X-Shield Solutions for its innovative AEGIS-X 2.0, describing it as comparable to, and in some instances superior to, imported alternatives. He praised the company's youthful leadership for investing in Nigeria's defense sector. The unveiling of the AEGIS-X 2.0 is seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria's pursuit of defense industrialization and strategic self-reliance, with the vehicle designed and manufactured locally to meet the country's specific operational needs.
