Reps seek probe of Itakpe-Warri train derailment, compensation for victims

Nigerian lawmakers are calling for a comprehensive inquiry into the recent train accident on the Itakpe-Warri rail corridor, which tragically resulted in four fatalities and multiple injuries. The House of Representatives adopted a motion urging the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to investigate the causes of the derailment and ensure victims receive appropriate compensation.

The accident, which occurred on June 8, 2026, has amplified concerns about passenger safety and operational standards within Nigeria's railway system. The Itakpe-Warri line is a vital standard-gauge corridor connecting Delta, Edo, and Kogi states, serving thousands of commuters and businesses daily. Lawmakers highlighted that beyond the loss of life and physical harm, passengers endured financial losses, emotional distress, and disruption to their lives and businesses.

The accident has heightened concerns about passenger safety, operational standards, maintenance practices and emergency preparedness within the country’s railway system.

Francis Waive, the Delta lawmaker who sponsored the motion, noted the incident's impact on public confidence in rail transportation. He stressed the urgent need for remedial measures to prevent future occurrences. The House acknowledged the swift response of the Delta State Government, emergency agencies, healthcare workers, and local residents in the rescue and medical care efforts for the injured.

The House's Committee on Land Transport and Committee on Legislative Compliance will monitor the resolution's implementation and report back within four weeks.
